Supports XRechnung (CII or UBL, .xml) and ZUGFeRD / Factur-X PDFs - invoices and credit notes

What is XRechnung / ZUGFeRD?

XRechnung and ZUGFeRD are structured electronic invoice formats used for B2B and public-sector invoicing in Germany. Unlike a regular PDF, they carry invoice data, vendor, amounts, tax, line items, as machine-readable XML, so accounting software can read them automatically without anyone typing the numbers in by hand.

XRechnung is a pure XML file with no visual layout of its own, opening it directly just shows code. ZUGFeRD (and the joint German/French standard Factur-X) is a hybrid: a normal-looking PDF with the same structured XML data embedded inside it, so it's readable by both humans and machines.

Why you can't just double-click them

A ZUGFeRD PDF opens fine in any PDF reader, since it's a real PDF underneath, but the reader only shows you the visual layer, not the structured data hidden inside it. An XRechnung .xml file has no visual layer at all, so double-clicking it in most systems either does nothing useful or opens raw code in a text editor or browser. Both need a dedicated viewer, like this one, to actually read the structured invoice data and display it the way a normal invoice looks.

Frequently asked questions

Is my invoice uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and parsed entirely in your browser using JavaScript. It's never sent to our servers, stored, logged, or passed to any AI model.

What file formats are supported?

XRechnung in CII or UBL XML format, and ZUGFeRD / Factur-X PDFs with embedded XML. Both invoices and credit notes.

Can I print the result?

Yes, use the Print / Save as PDF button, which opens your browser's normal print dialog with a layout made for printing.

The tool says my PDF has no e-invoice data. What does that mean?

It means the PDF doesn't have a ZUGFeRD/Factur-X XML file embedded inside it, it's a plain PDF invoice, which this tool can't read structured data from.

Do I need an account to use this?

No. There's no signup, and nothing about your file is saved anywhere.

Does this replace accounting software?

No, it's a free viewer for reading individual e-invoice files. If you want invoices automatically extracted from your inbox and exported to Excel, that's what InboxDoc itself does.
